Spinning Tuesdays: On Board Bobbin Winder and a Denise2Go Giveaway

When I took a class from Sarah Anderson in August, a very nice woman, Debra, sat next to me. She had the coolest set up on her wheel, thanks to her clever husband.

Come look. Can you guess what this is?

What is it?

A removable bobbin winder for her Lendrum!

On board bobbin winder

Here it is in action. It is so simple and brilliant!

So brilliant!

It was turned on a lathe from a dowel. I really want one, for all of my wheels. Have any of you brilliant spinners seen something like this for sale anywhere? Or maybe I can figure it out with PVC, hmmmm. Have I mentioned I love gadgets?

Oh it’s perfect! I’ve used Denise before and I love the needles, I would love to have one to keep in my bag for emergencies; I seem to need to knit everywhere I go!

  2. Beth

    That’s a lovely needle set.

I’m trying to learn to spin with a drop spindle, so your gadgetry is way beyond me. For now.

  3. Deb

I would absolutely love this set–I have been toting around a large interchangeable set and I think this would be a much better solution. Cute too!

  4. Page

That needle set is just too cute. My 6 year old just started knitting and put needles on her wish list for this holiday season. If I win this set they will make her day! 🙂

  5. Dawn

I have always wanted to try this set out. When I first started knitting in the 70s, I used the interlocking system you could buy at LeeWards–I think it was Boyle. The joins where terrible and the needles kept falling off because they would loosen and unscrew. Would love this set!

  6. Anne Marie

That is the most fun interchangeable set I’ve ever seen! Perfect Christmas gift for one of my young daughters. Fingers crossed!

  8. jennybookworm

Nice set – It would be good to give to a new knitter as a starter — or uh, just keep for myself 😉

  9. Sarah from Ctown

I love the colors! And I would love a set that properly fits in my purse. It would help tremendously in my attempts to stop my husband mocking the overflow from my purse – more room for skeins!

  10. Karen Rose (purplepenguin on Ravelry)

Pretty colors! It would be different to knit on them, my needles are usually wood. What is the bobbin for? I spin on a drop spindle, so I don’t have a wheel. Is it for bobbin lace? (You never know!)

  11. Gina W

My Denise set has been getting quite the workout lately sinc I taught my cousin to knit. The 2Go kit is just what we need!

  12. Josiane

Oooh, that needle set would be the perfect present for my sister-in-law who wants to learn how to knit! That’d be a terrific way to get her started with some of the essential tools.

  13. ardosa

i love interchangables! My daughter (14) has been knitting and wants a set too – this would be a lovely gift!

  14. Susan

I’ve never seen a bobbin winder for the wheel, but absolutely love the idea! Stand alone bobbin winders run over $100. If your friend can convince her husband to make more of these, she could sell them on Etsy (for example) and have a very nice side business. I would love one for my Majacraft Rose. Wish I (or my husband) were that handy!

The Denise2Go travel sets also look really handy.

  15. greta

maybe you could use a dowel with a brass plumbing union to make one without haveing to turn one? just a thought… Love the Denise 2Go set and it would be perfect for my commuting knitting!

  16. Nancy

I LOVE interchangable needles, a second set would be wonderful for when I want to start a second project and am already using that size needle.

  17. Samina

Ooh, I’d love a travel set of needles! Oh, & thanks to you (in part), I’m a newbie spinner. I succumbed after being bombarded by the constant spinning stuff on the blog!

  18. elizabeth

A knitting emergency — I KNEW I couldn’t be the only one to ever suffer from one. These would be the perfect solution. Thanks.

  19. Cassandra

The travel set of interchangeable needles looks lovely – its a nice size and so attractive – you could always be prepared when the knitting urge struck!

  20. thatgrrl

I want that! It’d be particularly awesome for the bus ride home after a trip to the yarn shop when I can’t wait to start swatching.

  21. Beth Rudo

This would be such a handy set to take on trips or keep in my knitting bag! Including an extender makes this kit even more useful.

  22. Ivanna

What a brilliant gift idea with the perfect bright colors to encourage a novice knitter and to give an experienced knitter the perfect pack & go! Lovely.

  23. Amanda

I love gadgets too! Something like that should be easy to put together with a dowel and a long bolt, threaded to match.

  24. Karen

That is one of the coolest DIYs I’ve seen in a while! And the Denise set would be great when traveling and you find something you have to start rightnow!

  25. Lori

I tried out my sister’s Denise interchangeable needles this weekend. They were great! These pastel colors are super cute.

  26. Danielle

Perfect size kit for someone like me who has never tried interchangeable needles. Thanks for the chance to win a set.

  27. Ellen

I love gadgets and I’d love to win the needles.

I would check if you have a local woodturning group, someone there could probably make you one or six.

  28. Sandy

I have wanted to try interchangeable needles, this may be my chance. Thank you for a great contest. Great colours!!!

  29. Julie

Thanks so much for yet another generous giveaway. I have an epic and rather unexpected cross country move in my near future (Yellowknife to Ontario, while quite pregnant, with my darling and rambunctious toddler for company, all in the dead of winter. True story.), and these lovely needles sure would come in handy… :->

  30. Megan Fannon

Oh my gosh, what a cute set. I have “regular” blue and grey Denises and I love them. I use them for anything that I’m not doing on dpns. I would love to have this set.

  31. Jo-ann

Those needles need to come and stay with me in Australia. I would love a set of handbag needles for kitting emergencies. And colored too. Thanks to Knitty and Denise2Go for another cool giveaway.

  32. Nigel Pottle

Those needles look like crayons – one almost expects them to leave a colour trace on the knitted work.

  33. Steph N

I’m hardly even a spinner, but that does seem like a super-useful gadget!

Count me in for the needles, too, please.

  34. Kayteau

Doesn’t everyone have knitting emergencies? That set is really nice! Someone will be lucky to win – and yes, I hope it is me.*g*

  35. Alix

What a perfect addition to a travel knitting bag! If I unexpectedly inexplicably finish the current project while I’m far from home, all I’ll need is yarn to start up something new. (Something to keep my idle hands from becoming the devil’s workshop.)

  36. Lynn b

mmmm these would be lovely! Thanks for the giveaway.

Is there a local wood turner living close by who could custom fashion a bobbin winder for you? Wood looks so much nicer on a wheel than pvc.

  37. Margay

I’ve always wanted to learn to spin! Maybe some day. But in the meantime, I’d love to get my hands on a set of interchangeable needles.

  38. Shirley Balika

Looks pretty cool. This would be the perfect gift for my talented and artsy niece who is creating beautiful things out of yarn.

  39. Anita

Very nice idea! I confess to not being that clever with my wheel.

I love my Denise needles – nice points, nice join with the cable. Thank you to Barbara for this gift to 2 lucky knitters.

  40. Pam

Wouldn’t it be fun to win these? Then I’d have to keep track of the date & not enter all these wonderful Knitty contests 😉

  41. Lotsofhermies on Rav

I haven’t seen that winder but what an awesome idea someone could make a mint or a lot of happy spinners. Maybe a trade for yarn? 😉 I would like to try the needles as well.

  42. sherinik

Oooohhh…but if I had these in my handbag that would facilitate yarn buying emergencies! It’s an addition I’m trying to control…badly…

  43. Kathy

I would really enjoy winning these needles. I wouldn’t have to borrow my mother-in-laws for every new project I start!

  44. Zach

OOOh, would love to have a set like that. You can never have too many needles, especially for a polyamorous knitter.

  45. Lynn

    1. Yes, I have seen such a gadget and own one – the Forysths (who make the awesome wool combs) have a device they call Jennie the Plyer which comes with a little bobbin winder like this.

    2. If you have a Lendrum already the weaving bobbins might fit on your flyer, no need for any attachments, just might want to short circuit the sliding loop or flyer and wind on directly from a bobbin on a Kate!

  46. Karen W.

I’d love to win the Denise needles. They are such pretty colors. Thanks for your interesting blog each week.

  47. Jan

Oh, wow, those could go anywhere with me! (I travel on public transportation, so I’m always careful of what needles I bring.)

Thanks again for another great giveaway!

Happy Thanksgiving to the Knitty Team!

  48. Anne Ormsby

Love the giveaway! I have been looking at these needles as a travel set; the price is right. I am not a needle snob; except I do love circulars…so less likely for the knitting to slide off the needles.

  49. Debra

What a cute little needle case. It would make travelling with my knitting so much easier. Thanks for the giveaway.

  50. Wendy

Wish I had these to throw in my travel bag right now! Thanks for the offer and a Happy Thanksgiving to all.

  51. Ruth Whisenant

Isn’t the thing stuck on a spinning wheel like that, to re-wind bobbins, called a quill? I believe that some wheels have them available. I also love the needle set 🙂

  52. Amanda

Great little set! I don’t have any travelling needles and the long needles always end up punching a hole at the bottom of my bag. 🙂

  53. Eva

Hello. I thought I would give the contest a try. Lovely gift! But if the skill question involves math in any way, I will definitely lose! 🙁

  54. Tina_R

Denise2… perfect to replace my lost set of KnitPicks interchange-ables. I’ve become so used to using circs that’s so strange to knit with straights! (it helps that the colors are “mine”!)

  55. Teri

A Christmas present for me! My DH always wonders if there really is a Santa because stuff does mysteriously appear under the tree. This would really confuse him.

  56. Brandi

I love the cute Denise set!! And the perfect present for my Christmas stocking! 😀

    Good luck everyone.

  57. blogless grace

Kudos to the Husband! Coolest bobbin winder ever! Love the needle sets–great colors, adorable fabrics.

  58. Marsha

If I had one of those needle sets with me at all times, then I wouldn’t end up with five pairs of size 6 needles (purchased when I was not at home and in dire need to knitting!). 🙂

  59. Lee Wells

A set of Denise interchangeable needles sounds like a useful addition to any knitter’s gear. Include me in the contest. Thanks, Lee

  60. Stephanie

YoU really should post some of these skill testing questions so those of us who don’t win can still play along.

  61. Geraldine Bowman

Those Denise needles would be such a perfect birthday gift, early December, for my very good friend at work

  62. Angela

I’d love to win the Denise set – perfect for trips when some type of yarn usually finds it’s way into the shopping bag and you need something to knit it with before you get home!

  63. Lynn

Those needles are so cute, they would fit perfectly in my purse! Thanks for giving us this opportunity to win them.

  64. martha

i have wanted to get a set of denise interchangeables for awhile now. thank you for the chance to win a set.

  65. KatsoKnits

These are absolutely lovely, so pretty and feminine. I really need a set of interchangeable needles. I never seem to have the right size with me when I’m planning to cast on a new project when I’m on the road. I know, better planning could probably alleviate that problem, but since we know that won’t happen, an interchangeable needle set seems like a much better option for me.

  66. Connie

I just discovered your blog tonight and I am enjoying it…love the opportunity to receive a set of interchangeable needles. I’ve been reading up on them and would love a set.
