Jillian’s Spinning: The Spinner’s Book of Fleece Giveaway!

Woo-hoo a spinning giveaway! Not just any spinning giveaway either – friend, breed enthusiast and expert spinner, Beth Smith has been working on this book for years and it’s finally here!

Beth's bouncing baby book!
Beth’s bouncing baby book!

This book picks up right where Deb Robson’s Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook left off. It answers the question, sheep breed by sheep breed, “how do I work with it?” This book covers choosing, washing, prepping and spinning fleece. It’s thorough and pretty amazing, just look:

It's gorgeous!
It’s gorgeous! Also sheep!

Storey Publishing has donated a copy of this beautiful book for a giveaway.

Want to explore some of the breeds Beth Smith discusses in The Spinner’s Book of Fleece? Enter Alison from The Spinning Loft. She built a raw fleece sampler around Beth and her book, The Beth Smith Sampler.

Here’s her description:  This sampler pack is a fantastic companion. Containing 2 oz. each of 15 breeds that Beth identifies and/or discusses in the book, this is a great way to get a taste for some of Beth’s favorite fibers.  Contents of the sampler vary based on stock, but each sample is found in the book.

How many people are so fiber obsessive they have a fleece sampler named after them? Alison has donated one sampler for our giveaway.

WOW! Given how good the Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook is I can only imagine how good this book is going to be. I love working with different breeds but knowing the best way to treat them is always a challenge.

  2. Ellen Porcari

Oh wow! Didn’t know this was coming out. If I don’t win it, I’m going to be looking for it.

  3. Kara

I’m so excited to check out this book. I’m putting it on my wish list, and hoping for a chance to win it here!

  4. Juliann

I’m throwing in my hat. Just curious about the question thing. I didn’t understand that part. To win someone has to answer a question? Oh, well, I’ll take a chance anyway. Thanks.

  5. Deborah Overath

I’m a relatively new spinner but am collecting all the resources I can to help me learn more and more. This book and sampler collection look AWESOME!!!!

  6. Claire

Looks like the book I’ve been looking for – the last (only!) fleece I bought was rough and full of scurf, and I’ve been wary of buying one since then; think I’m ready for another go now but I want to be prepared with a bit more knowledge of what I’m looking for/at this time!

  7. Rachel Martinez

I would love this book for my sister, who is really diving into the world of spinning! I could legitimately call her my “spinster!” 🙂

  8. denise

this is SOOOO exciting! i LOVE Beth Smith Pink. she is a fountain of fiber knowledge and inspiration. and let’s face it, she is just too cute.

  9. Roxie

I’m an old spinner that hasn’t spun in a while (raising family). I am trying to get back into it right know. Thank you for this opportunity. 🙂

  10. Iris

It’s been my goal for the past year or so to try spinning new breeds and knit them all into a blanket. This is an awesome giveaway for that kind of project!

  11. Anna

That looks like an amazing book. I tend to gravitate towards buying wool fibre in breeds that I haven’t yet worked with, just to see what it’s like, so something like this would be a fantastic resource.

  12. Barbara

What a wonderful and generous give-away! I knew about the book, but this is the first I’ve heard of the sampler – that is just an awesome idea. I’ll be buying the book if I don’t win and will now have to add the sampler to my wish list, too!

  13. AsKatKnits

Congratulations to Beth! The book is phenomenal! But, wait – there is now a Beth Smith Sample?!? How awesome is that!

  14. Alicia

I am a gigantic fan of the Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook and of Beth Smith’s teaching so I’ve been looking forward to this book for a while, I would absolutely love to win!

  15. Joy

I have the first book and would love a copy of this one – the breed sampler is just the icing on the cake! 🙂

  16. Jenny Lettice

Awesome book that has a lot of answers that are commonly asked by spinners! Well done! 😉

  17. Roz

Wow what a great looking prize. Some spinner is going to be very lucky. Crossing my fingers that it’s me.

  18. Sarah

Oh, if I win this, my mother-in-law will have one amazing Christmas gift! Maybe I should get it whether I win or not!

  19. Kathleen Hendrix

When I fell down the rabbit hole of spinning my version of “samples” was processing and spinning whole fleeces. So far Suffolk, Romney Coopworth cross and Cormo. Next up Jacob. Gosh, a sample pack might be a little less time consuming. But I’m learning A LOT!

  20. Carolyn Dean

Belong to Fiber Friends of SW MO- this would be a great resource for our library! I have just learned to spin, so I would share with the other members of the guild

  21. erin

Ooh, this would be fun! I’m just dipping my toes into yet-to-be-spun wool and am anticipating a couple of fleeces from a friend’s pet sheep. What a great resource to have at hand!

  22. Savannagal

I would love to learn to spin. The book and fibers sound quite interesting. Thanks for another terrific giveaway.

  23. R. Harper

So fascinating! I’ve just been spinning some Shetland for the first time, and I’m loving the feel of it. I want to try other breeds now!

  24. Pat Mofjeld

I’d LOVE a copy of Beth’s book. Could use the help as I’, returning to spinning following an absence of many years. Love her website and this one, too!

  25. Jessie

Would love to win that prize! Have started spinning a few months ago and am really enjoying it. I am eager to learn more about different types of fleece.

  26. Jan Quarles

Beth’s spinning different breeds class at Allegan a few years ago really rocked and I think the book will rock even more. Can’t wait!

  27. Sigridur Hrefna Thorsteinsd.

Oooh would be a fantastic way to learn more about fleece, only know the icelandic one. 🙂

  28. Tami

oh my goodness — what a lovely giveaway! The book and samples of fleece look amazing. Thank you…

  29. Samantha

This is an amazing prize! I’m a tactile learner, so this would be super helpful to use the sampler while going through the book.

  30. Melissa

That looks like it might be a book that should be in every spinners library. I am excited to check it out.

  31. Shirlucky

Oh I’d love to have this book and sampler. I’d share it with my friends! Thanks for the chance.

  32. Alison

Thanks for another great giveaway. I only started spinning last year, so this would be a great addition to my library and the fibre would be a fantastic learning experience.

  33. Karen Watkins

I’d love to learn more about spinning. I’ve spun with a spindle made of a down and a CD. I found it to be fun.

  34. Carrie

Holy moley, that is a spinner’s dream and what a combo. It would be so much fun to play with both the book and the fuzzy together!

  35. Aimee

Looks like exactly what I need to motivate myself to pull out my spindles! (Hot, sticky weather has NOT been motivating).

  36. terri

good thing there was nobody else around to hear me squeal when I saw this giveaway–thank you for doing this!

  37. Amanda

Super cool. I’ve not managed to spin much beyond my comfort zone but this looks like a great way to try new fiber. 🙂

  38. Doreen MacL

This looks like a terrific book! And what a super idea- a sample kit to go along with it.

  39. Lucy Harrington

I live in an area where there are different breeds of sheep ~ I would love to have a resource where I could make the best use of whatever I can get my fuzzy little hands on! Thank you for this opportunity!!

  40. MmmYarn

That photo of the sheep with the curly horns is lovely! Thank you for the opportunity of winning the book.

  41. Wendy booth

Wowza…the book is a definite must have and the sampler pack is a great idea. I always find new to me fibers to test spin. Great give-a-way.

  42. Kurt Siegel (nancyshusband on Ravelry)

The book and sampler look pretty phenomenal, especially for a beginner like me. Yes, I’ve been spinning for a couple of years, and I’m starting to produce some yarn that my wife actually has been knitting with, but I’ve only had a couple of classes, and the technical parts of the books leave me dazed (I couldn’t explain “grist” if my life depended on it!)

So while I certainly can use, and would love these two items, I’m pretty sure that if I was to be asked a skill testing question, I would leave everyone rolling on the floor laughing if I tried to answer it, or do a Cliff Clavin, and give an answer that – while technically correct – would have nothing to do with anyone else’s reality.

  44. Susan

That looks like a really great reference book for spinners. And the sampler to go with it — great giveaway. I would love the chance to work with such a variety of breeds! Thanks for the opportunity.

  45. Becky

So wonderful, as many of these breeds can be hard to come by. As someone who loves working with fleece, I hope all these knowledge and care from others translates into helping keep some breeds from rare or extinct status.

  46. James

Not a spinner but have really been wanting to give it a try. Just need to find someone to teach me.

  47. Linda Fisher

WOW! What a great opportunity. I am a new spinner and LOVE it, I want to learn more and more!

  48. Heather

This is an amazing giveaway! I would love to branch out and try different breeds this looks like the way to do that. Thanks

  49. Elaina R

This book looks so exciting. I’ve just started exploring new-to-me breeds, and I would love to learn from Beth Smith’s experience!

  50. Kelsy Petrykowski

Oh my, yes please! I recently moved back from Hawaii and had to make the difficult decision to part with some fiber as part of the move. Now that I am back in the land of the frozen north I can’t wait to try new fiber and spin til my hearts content this winter!

  51. Amy J

What a fantastic giveaway. I am slowly working my way through spinning self-challenges, trying different wools and different styles. This would be perfect to help me out! Thanks for the chance.

  52. Liz

Sheepily delicious! This looks like exactly the right addition to my spinning library at exactly the right time. Congrats on hatching the book, Beth. 🙂

  53. Lynn

Can’t wait to see this book, not sure I can hold off until a book signing. Bet the sampler is the perfect accompaniment – what a great giveaway!

  54. Josiane

You were absolutely right when you said this is “not just any spinning giveaway” – that’s a fabulous prize package! What a great way to learn more about fleece from various breeds, both in theory and practice!

  55. Heather Forsythe

I love the idea of having 15 breeds of fiber right there on hand to mess around with as I am reading the book! Chances are, I haven’t worked with many of them, though I love breed specific spinning challenges.

  56. Jude

That looks like an. Amazing book! What a guide to spinning different breeds, and with the sampler pack this is an awesome prize 😉

  57. Carolyn

Loved the Fleece and Fiber Handbook; this sounds like a really wonderful next step – I would love love love to win it!

  58. Kate (@ktsmurf)

Wow! What an awesome giveaway. I’m looking to get into spinning, so this would be super helpful!

  59. The Pumpkin Life

Whilst I would love to win this, I’m in the UK and guess that the giveaway is US only? Still, this is the second time that I have come across this book in two days, and it has rave reviews. I think that I might add this to my Christmas list.

I am returning to spinning after a year long hiatus. I have a new wheel to renovate; and my old (now repaired) wheel, plus a little fluff on the spindle. I can’t wait to get going again.

  60. Mary

This kit is wonderful! Like a ‘box of chocolate.’ The book & sampler pack gives the spinner a tasting of lovely fiber. Just like a tasting party it looks like it shows you how to best enjoy it.

  61. chris

This is such a great idea for a giveaway! I’ve been waiting for this book to come out for a while. The sampler pack is brilliant!

  62. Cynthia Acheson

What a wonderful giveaway! Please add me to your “hopefuls” list, as this book and sampler would be an amazing addition to my spinning resources ;). Thank you for offering this contest.
